Why Chords Go Out of Tune
- Lack of calluses:
Beginners don’t yet have calluses on their fingertips. Without them, the string pushes too far into the soft skin. - Overcompensating pressure:
Students think pressing harder will make the notes ring out, but instead the note bends slightly sharp. - Temporary roughness:
At first, some notes won’t ring clearly—and that’s okay. This improves as calluses form.
Why You Shouldn’t Over-Squeeze
- Bad habit risk: If you train yourself to always press hard, it becomes difficult to unlearn later.
- Tuning issues: Squeezing too hard literally bends the pitch sharp, making chords sound out of tune.
- Wasted effort: You don’t need brute strength—just the right balance of pressure and finger placement.
What To Do Instead
- Give it time – Allow calluses to develop naturally.
- Don’t panic if notes sound weak – Early on, it’s normal for chords not to sound perfect.
- Check after a few months – If, after steady practice, chords still sound bad, then adjust your pressure.
- Focus on control, not force – Good guitar tone comes from relaxed, efficient technique.
